BaO teamed up with UNIT and KJYAO in Hong Kong to build an inflatable installation for ClockenFlap music festival in West Kowloon. Having stumbled upon a Shenzhen factory unsold stock of 500 inflatable toy balls with which we weren't quite sure what to do, we decided to embrace our uncertainties and produce an indeterminate experimentation. The aim was to an inflatable object that we couldn't fully control, that would have a life of its own, and a form that we couln't fully predict. Air, our primary material will also be the designer. The balls were inflated and thrown in a gigantic black bag that was then closed-off and fully vaccumed. The inflated balls started gravitating toward each other, clustering and finding their natural places in the vaccumed black membrane. The installation thus plays on contrary pressures that when working together start creating a form that would not only be almost impossible to design but also a structure that would behave differently every time. In-De-Flate is all about raw process and unpredictability.
